Judges watching every move at cooking competition downtown
A statewide cooking competition is taking place Tuesday in downtown Des Moines.For more than a decade, high school students from around the state have been competing in the 2016 Iowa ProStart Invitational.It features teams of students who must prepare a three-course meal consisting of an appetizer, main dish, and dessert while cooking on two butane burners within an hour.The competition is the culmination of class study, internships, and what they have learned from mentors."It is really exciting because we are here at the Iowa Events Center where state basketball happens and all the other state championships happen, so we are kind of considering ourselves with those extracurricular activities," said May Schaben of the Iowa Restaurant Association.The top team in each category advances to the national competition in Dallas, Texas, next month where scholarships are on the line.
