Davenport Central High School students and future chefs are in Des Moines Tuesday to compete in this year’s ProStart Invitational.
Each team of students has one hour to prepare a three-course meal…
An appetizer, main dish, and dessert.
Instead of stoves, the students are given two butane burners.
This competition is the culmination of class study, internships, and what they have learned from mentors.
“It is really exciting because we are here at the Iowa events center where state basketball happens and all the other state championships happen, so we are kind of considering ourselves with those other extracurricular activities,” said May Schaben, Iowa Restaurant Association.
A restaurant management competition is also taking place.
The top team in each category advance to the national competition in Dallas next month where scholarships are on the line.
